Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday rejected the exit poll projections for the 2026 Assembly elections, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party manipulated the narrative by paying media outlets. In a video message, she expressed strong confidence that the All India Trinamool Congress would secure a decisive mandate, claiming the party would cross 226 seats in the 294-member Assembly.
Her remarks came after multiple exit polls suggested that the BJP could emerge as the largest party and possibly form the government by crossing the majority mark of 148 seats. Dismissing these projections, Banerjee alleged that the figures were circulated from a BJP office and broadcast after financial inducements. She claimed that the purpose of such projections was to shape public perception and reassure financial markets.
Addressing voters and party workers, Banerjee thanked them for participating in large numbers despite what she described as adverse conditions. She alleged that her party workers faced intimidation and violence during polling, accusing central agencies and security forces of acting in a partisan manner. She also referred to incidents of violence and hardship faced by workers in several areas, asserting that the electorate had responded through their votes.
Banerjee further cautioned party workers to remain vigilant during the counting process scheduled for May 4, warning of possible attempts to tamper with the process. She urged candidates and agents to closely monitor counting centres and not leave their positions unattended, even briefly, stressing the need for strict oversight until final results are declared.
While calling for calm and restraint, she advised supporters not to retaliate despite alleged provocations, stating that any wrongdoing would be addressed through proper channels. Reiterating her confidence, Banerjee said she is “100% sure” of victory and maintained that the actual results would differ significantly from the exit poll predictions.
